Did you know that having your business listed in Australian business directories can increase both your website traffic and search rankings? If the answer is yes, do you know which directories will give you the biggest boost? We’ve recently done the research to find out. But first, let’s look at how listing your business in online directories can open doors:

1. Get potential new customers via direct directory referrals.
2. Be identified as a local by search engines.
3. Increase your search engine rankings owing to increased backlinks.

All of these avenues for increasing website traffic are important. Number 1 speaks for itself. Number 2, well this is important because search engines gives higher rankings to local businesses. Door number 3, however, is what we are particularly interested in – backlinks!

Backlinks are an incoming link to your site from an external site. And from search engine perspectives, the more of backlinks you have, the more relevant your business. It goes without saying that the more backlinks you have from reputable sites, the more your stock increases yet again. So, if you’re listed on a lot of quality Australian business directories, you’ll increase the number of backlinks to your website, prove yourself a local, and in turn, boost your website traffic and search engine ranking.

Which Directories to Target?

The number of business directories available is quite astonishing. But you don’t need to be on all of them, and nor should you try to be. There’s a vast range of quality when it comes to directories and it’s important to ensure your brand integrity is maintained. There are also a number of paid directories that may prove great, but you need to be sure they provide value.

One of the best ways to determine if a directory is worth listing on is to determine how much website traffic it gets. High traffic will increase its perceived relevance in a Google search. It also increases your chance of getting a direct business referral. But how do you find this out?

Enter the Alexa Rankings

A great website for marketers, Alexa ranks websites worldwide on the number of visitors they attract. Alexa also provides an estimate of a website’s popularity in a specific country (using a combination of average daily visitors and pageviews).
Alexa ranks websites in order of the most popular (most viewed websites). Australia’s top ranking website comes as no surprise – it’s Google. Not many businesses can compete on that scale. Consider also how many websites might be viewed (not just built) in Australia and you come to understand it’s a vast number. So sitting at the top of the ranks is no mean feat.

Knowing the total number of visitors to a directory is important, but so too is how the directory performs on search engines. This is where Domain Authority comes into the picture. Domain Authority is a score out of 100 that predicts how well a website will rank on search engines. Domain Authorities are calculated by a company called Moz. Moz models and replicates search engine algorithms to generate its results.

In addition to National directories, there are also a number of local directories that you can add your business credentials to. These directories don’t usually rank highly in the Alexa Rankings, but they can still tell search engines that your business is relevant to your local area. And, who knows, they might just get your phone ringing. Some charge a fee for listing so it is up to you to determine if this a worthwhile spend.
